In the NEC, anything known as an “exterior electrical system” must be bonded (NEC 250.94 Bonding of Other Systems). This includes systems such as telephone, internet, SATV and CATV. Bonding is done to establish electrical continuity and conductivity; it establishes an effective fault current and helps to open overcurrent protection in devices such as breakers.

By bonding the broadband feed, cable TV feed, satellite feeds and  lightning arrestor systems all back to the main grounding electrode, a low impedance path is established that allows current to safely flow to ground instead of through the metal components in our homes, and also keeps the current from endangering the home’s occupants.
