Ask Mr. Tight-Watt: Exterior Insulation

You can insulate a brick home but must cover up the brick.

Ask Mr. Tight-Watt

Q: I have an older brick house and there is no room between the walls for insulation. Can I put the insulated panel on over the brick and put siding on over that? ? Dave, a Smart Choices reader

Mr. Tight Watt asked Bill McAnally, our energy-efficient home building expert , to advise Dave.

A: Yes, this is actually the newest recommended best practice for creating more energy efficient homes … working strictly on the outside, rather than messing up living space indoors. This practice started in cold-climate Canada, where, out of necessity, many energy-efficiency practices begin.

Here’s what you do:

  • Put a minimum of 2 inches of polystyrene foam over the brick.
  • Cover the house with house wrap.
  • Add furring strips.
  • Put the new siding on over top.
